- Commemorated on the Lee on Solent Memorial, James was a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy based at HMS 'Goshawk', a land facility. He was on board an unescorted ship, the 'Almeda Star' when it was hit by torpedos from U-96. The ship was carrying 120 personnel from the Fleet Air Arm, 34 from the Royal Navy and 15 from the RNVR as well as 136 crew. All were lost.
