    • From the Cyclopedia of New Zealand:

      Mr William HOLDAWAY was born in Hampshire, England in 1929 and came to Nelson by the ship "Mary Ann" in 1842. As one of the early settlers he experienced the usual hardships of a pioneer's life and at one time was compelled to eat fern roots for subsistence. He carried on farming for many years at Richmond, where he owned 25 acres of land and rented other sections. mr HOLDAWAY died on 4 May 1897 in consequence of influenza and complications resulting therefrom. He took no part in public affairs but he was an Oddfellow of many years standing. Mr HOLDAWAY left a family of four sons and one daughter.
