• Notes

  Maria was married close to the time that her father remarried. Her own mother had been dead for only a year. The legal documents found so far, indicate that William provided very well for Maria. When he died, he left her only the piano and some small provisions in his will. However a document exists showing that William made good provision for his only child. It states "by indenture dated 26th Sept 1853 and made between Maria Dearnley, spinster....being the settlement made in contemplation of the marriage then intended and shortly afterwards solemnised between Maria Neal and Robert Neal, certain freehold properties situated at North Duffield and Morley in the said county of York....recently sold....said sum of four thousand pounds.' Because women in those days had no property rights, Alfred and Henry Neal were made trustees and after Henry's death, John took it on. Robert had used the monies to help pay for the Epsom house and the Wellesley Street property.
