| Notes |
- Will was admitted to West Christchurch school in 1877. His last day there was 25 Nov 1886 when he stated he was going t work for A J White.
Although born in New Zealand, William and his brother Harry, went to Australia. Will trained as a mining engineer at Zeehan School of Mines, Tasmania. He was married there and four of his five children were born in Tasmania. After the death of his eldest son and the decline of the mines, the family moved to Western Australia and lived in various mining towns, such as Cue. Finally they settled in Greenbushes, where Will joined up during World War 1 aged 44 years. His nephew Major George MAYNE (son of James and Ada) was killed at Gallipoli and he (William) thought the family should be represented. He was in No. 2 section of No. 3 Tunnelling Corps, and was killed on the outskirts of Hershin, on the Somme. He is commemorated on the Hersin Communal Cemetery Extension ,Plate No. 27, and on the Roll of Honour in the Australian Memorial War Museum, Canberra.
