• Notes

  It is believed that the Beecks came from the Province of Posen, at that time part of the Kingdom of Prussia. Poland had ceded the territory to Prussia after the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1815. Posen returned to Polish rule after World War 1 and is now known as Poznan. The Beeck"s were almost certainly, farmers on soil which produced a variety of wheat, rye, potatoes, sugar, beet and flax. In 1830 the King of Prussia decreed that all his Protestant subjects belonged to the Union Church. However the Beeck's were Lutheran. It appeared that the Lutherans were persecuted and many left their country. The Beeck's made their way to Tschicherzig, an Oder River port in Brandenburg. Here, they boarded a river barge which transported them by river and canal to Berlin. From here they proceeded overland to Hanover and then Bremen. On 28 August 1847, August and Christiane Beeck with their sons Robert (14 years), Gustav (7 years) and Adolph (1 year), left Germany on the "Gellert". It berthed at Port Adelaide on 19 December 1847. It is not known where they lived on arrival. However, by 1849 they were at Lobethal where Philipp was born and baptised. Also on the "Gellert" were Carl Beeck, 28, his sister Auguste Wilhelmine Zweck (nee Beeck) and their father, Matthias, 65. Also, Auguste's husband, Friedrich Wilhelm Zweck and their son Wilhelm Friedrich. Their relationship to George August is unknown.
