  Ruby was the true matriarch, short, fat, well-corseted, and totally domineering. She wore black clothes and diamonds a great deal, and rarely allowed her son any freedom. Ern Junior, had learned to fly planes and joined the Air Force during WW11. His mother got him out by insisting he was needed on the land. When he married, his wife was expected to live with his mother and father. When she left him and returned to New Zealand, he followed and remarried her, but was soon divorced again. Ern, with his mother and father, went to New Zealand to persuade his first wife, Allison, to return to Australia with their baby son. At the same time, he offered the job of running the Norseman Hotel to his unemployed brother-in-law, Laurie Grange. Everyone concerned left New Zealand and went to Perth in 1949. Once again, Ruby would not allow the couple to live on their own and this time the marriage broke down completely.
