| Notes |
- Joseph Simmonds, 23, Frances, 22, and Fanny, infant under one year, sailed from Deal on 26 September 1841. They arrived in Nelson, 1 Feb 1842, on board the 'Fifeshire'. The ship was wrecked on rocks just off shore.
The first four childrens' births were registered in the Wesleyan Church, Nelson, even though Fanny Elizabeth had been born in England. The other three were registered, but unnamed.
Joseph and Frances stated their residence as Spon Street, Coventry on their marriage certificate. Witnesses were James and Mary Ann Ward.
On the ship's indenture, the family said that they came from Much Park St., Coventry. In a letter written by Joseph Simmonds late in life, he writes of a brother William, of 73 Gosford Street, Coventry. All three streets mentioned are still in existence in central Coventry.
From the Coventry Archives: 23 April 1833. The apprenticeship indentures dated 9 Feb 1833 of Joseph Simmonds were enrolled with the City Council. He was apprenticed to his father John Simmonds, carpenter, and described as 'one of the children of Mrs Bailey's charity'. [Katherine Bayley's charity provided education for boys usually from the age of 11 to 14; at 14 they were bound apprentices with a premium of 3 pounds.]
23 Feb 1841 Joseph Simmonds was admitted to the Freedom of the City, having served his apprenticeship to his father as a carpenter. John Simmonds lived in Much Park Street Ward and, by the time of claiming admission, Joseph lived in Bishop Steet Ward.
