- New Zealand was one of the first places in the worlld to repeal the law against men marrying the sister of a dead wife. When Wesley went to England in 1898, the law had not been changed in that country. When he took Annie to England in 1908, the family joke was that he said to her upon landing, 'Now we are legally married, my dear'. he was 11 years older than his second wife.
