Charles Spragg Senior was contracted to lay the first tram tracks in Auckland, which were laid on wooden sleepers. He worked on the engineering of the reclamation of Queen Street to Quay Street. Charles Ball worked with him. Charles Spragg Jnr. and Ann Eliza Ball met through their fathers' friendship.
During this time a house was built at Arch Hill for the Ball family and later this house was the residence of Charles and Annie Spragg. Charlie was a breeder of singing birds. Mary Pemberton remembers him saying of a bird, 'It'll be a lovely songster. Kath Spragg tells a lovely story of Charles Spragg Jnr. which goes as follows:
Charlie was riding his bicycle to his wife's funeral when he was hit by a car and taken to the hospital where Kath was a nursing sister. She was supervising carrying the unconscious old man inside when she suddenly realised who it was. Charles Spragg had been the name of her own father, so she was perplexed for a moment. Charlie said later, "I was riding to my little Annie's funeral when I was hit by a car. I came round to hear Kath Spragg saying, 'Good Heavens, it's Uncle Charlie!' | SPRAGG, Charles (I2467)
